Good thing, I was so ready for February to be over. Shame there still isn’t any decent weather on the horizon.

I’m finding it hard to believe that we are already in the third month of the year. The first two seemed to go by in a blur.

It’s better that way.

At least the roads are somewhat clear of salt around here and as long as it stays cold not wet from snow melt so I can drive the Jaguar now and then.

Also I played Brams Symphony 1 the other day, very nice.

I finally realized that to really get Brahm’s music you have to be about 40 years old. There is just so much life experience packed into that music, so much emotion, so much loss, so much love,  so much catharsis. I haven’t played a Brahms symphony in many years. For as little as the trumpets have to do, it can be very challenging.

I actually played it last year with a different orchestra. I did enjoy it more the second time. Also turned 41 recently so there’s that.

I guess you’re right, not so much for trumpets, but lots of exposed horn stuff. As violins it’s pretty nonstop and with rhythm traps everywhere.

I’m going to post two of MY favourites now. :p

(I was primarily a bass clarinetist in high school and college, and all the old school marches had parts that doubled euphonium parts, so you probably know why these are big on my list.)

I don’t know New Colonial. I’ll have to give it a listen. One of my middle-schoolers moved to bass clarinet this year. He is doing well, but he has carped on occasion about having boring parts. My other son plays euphonium (I also have a high-schooler who plays trumpet). The best thing about my son moving to BC is that the two of them now go to the same after school sectional.

Since I had never heard of RB Hall, I looked him up and learned this interesting tidbit:

The trio from Hall’s New Colonial March provides the music for Stanford University ’s official fight song , Come Join the Band .

Interesting.
